Hutang Yese is the commercial complex attached to the “Romantic Xuan'en” tourism area (a national 4A scenic area) — an immersive dining-and-leisure destination built around local grilled fish and Tujia and Miao culture, and a key link in Xuan'en's eat-stay-travel-shop-entertain chain. Its night image had to sit comfortably inside the scenic area's atmosphere while still giving the building a recognisable identity after dark.

01Approach

The building carries a long-span timber pitched roof over a transparent glass curtain wall. The lighting is therefore set in a low-brightness, warm colour temperature: the eaves and timber frame are outlined to establish the “see-through timber” silhouette; a low-level wash inside the curtain wall lets the warmth of the interior leak out naturally; the entrance roof is lifted in brightness to anchor the view along the street. Restrained but not flat — in keeping with Xuan'en's “scenic area and town as one” night atmosphere.
